Goshen Art Gallery (New Showroom)

Goshen Art Gallery welcomes you and your guest to our new gallery showroom located at Millenia Walk!

Goshen Art Gallery moves into yet another bigger space at Millenia Walk since Dec 2016. From its previous 1200sqft space at Suntec City Mall, the 2500 sqft space at Millenia Walk will allow Mr. Jack Yu, Director and Curator of Goshen Art Gallery, to organise more bigger scale exhibitions and events. The new location also caters to the affluent shoppers, corporations and C-suites working in the area, and believe to draw a larger audience with its on-going monthly activities happening in the gallery. “As promised, we want to continualy entice the art enthusiasts with new space and events.” said Mr Yu.

Details of the Exhibition:

“Time/Out” is a special exhibition not only because of the themed subject but also the choice of medium by Singaporean artist May Oon.

In the 1800s Singapore, Chinese coolies arrived to seek a living – they were involved in hard labour, and suffered much hardship. These workers gave this country the manpower needed to create the foundations that enabled Singapore to grow from third world to first.

Oon wanted her works to act as an instigator for reflection, and in TIME/OUT she hopes to remind Singaporeans of their migrant roots and pays tribute to these unsung heroes. Most of the works depict the lives of coolies in the 1800s and early 1900s.

The charm and allure of Oon’s latest works come from how easily her medium and subject matter dovetail together; Charcoal and oil on jute.

This exhibition presents 14 pieces of her most symbolic paintings in recent times.

Synopsis:

In the 1800s Singapore, Chinese coolies arrived to seek a living – they were involved in hard labour, and suffered much hardship. These workers gave this country the manpower needed to create the foundations that enabled Singapore to grow from third world to first.

Oon wanted her works to act as an instigator for reflection, and in TIME/OUTshe hopes to remind Singaporeans of their migrant roots. Oon herself traces her ancestry to Tan Teng Poh, the father of Tan Kheam Hock. Kheam Hock was born in Penang in 1862 and was a successful ‘towkay’. His 1922 obituary stated:

“In 1901, he contracted with the Tanjong Pagar Dock Company to supply coolie labour. He continued the labour contract with the Singapore Harbour Board till the time of his death, and there were as many as 5,000 coolies earning their living under him.”

So much attention has been paid to the pioneers, like Oon’s grandfather, Kheam Hock, who helped build up our island state, but the coolies have never been given any recognition. In TIME/OUT, May Oon pays tribute to these unsung heroes.

Most of the works in charcoal and oil, depict the lives of coolies in the 1800s and early 1900s. Oon used archival photography as source material.

The charm and allure of Oon’s latest works come from how easily her medium and subject matter dovetail together; an interesting turn in Oon’s artmaking practice is her incorporation of the humble sack-cloth, or jute, as her surface. This medium represents ‘hard labour’ which the migrant workers had to undertake to eke out a living.
